Arthralgia refers to the mild to severe pain in the joint. When we feel pain in several joints in our body we call it polyarthralgia. There are multiple severe arthralgia treatment approaches. The doctor will find out a proper treatment plan for you after studying the underlying condition or cause of the joint pain.

In fact, arthralgia is just a symptom and not a disease. You will suffer from joint ache only when you have any illness, arthritis, injury to the joint or infection. You may also have arthralgia along with joint stiffness if you are allergic to certain medications.

Therefore, It is necessary to treat severe arthralgia if the soreness is unbearable to you. Severe arthralgia management broadly consists of two approaches. The primary one includes medication and the secondary one is without medication.

Severe Arthralgia treatment with medication

Acute arthralgia usually goes away on its own and does not require medication. You may take medicine If the pain worsens. Moreover, chronic arthralgia also requires medical treatment. Medications used for treating the symptoms are as follows:

  • Pain killers/NSAIDs
  • Switching to a different medication
  • Antibiotics
  • Narcotics
  • Corticosteroids
  • Antidepressants
  • Anticonvulsants
  • Venlafaxine

Pain killers/NSAIDs

When it comes to relieving pain, pain relievers are the first thing that comes to our mind. You can also take Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Medications such as Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen. These pain killers relieve joint and muscle pain to a larger extent.

NSAIDs are usually combined with codeine or oxycodone for severe arthralgia treatment.  Moreover, corticosteroids such as dexamethasone and prednisolone are also used to arthralgia pain management.

I suggest you not take the pain killers in an empty stomach or with alcohol. This may precipitate peptic ulcer or gastric ulcer. Always consume these medications only when you have eaten something.

Switching to a different medication

Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) such as Anastrozole, Letrozole, and Tamoxifen are the most commonly prescribed medications.

Doctors prescribe these medicines to treat breast cancer in post-menopausal women. However, you may suffer joint pain and stiffness if you take any of these medications. In such arthralgia symptoms, you need to switch to a different AI.

Antibiotics

When you have arthralgia due to an infection, you can have a fever and chills as well. If the doctor finds out the cause of your joint pain is an infection, he will prescribe you an antibiotic. Either You have to take it orally or administer Intravenous.

Healthcare professionals prefer IV antibiotics to kill rapidly proliferating microorganisms in the blood. You should take caution while taking antibiotics. Complete the course of medication and ask the doctor about how to take it. If you miss a dose, don’t take extra pills, else, an overdose is also harmful.

Narcotics

Pain is a feeling. The CNS (Central nervous system) relay messages to the affected area and sense pain. We can hinder the communication by CNS to sense pain. Narcotics are such medications that act by blocking the signal relayed by CNS.

The most commonly used narcotic analgesics to treat severe arthralgia are codeine, hydrocodone, and oxycodone.

Always consult your doctor before taking such medications. These medicines have several side effects such as nausea, dizziness sedation. It is better not to take narcotics analgesic for joint pain while traveling.

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are synthetics steroids and are administered externally to the patient. Prednisolone, cortisone, and methylprednisolone are commonly used corticosteroids. These medications resemble cortisone. a stress hormone found in the human body.

These medicines relieve pain by decreasing inflammation. They hinder the movement of WBCs to the site of inflammation.  This is how these medications relieve severe arthralgia.

Corticosteroids are different from anabolic steroids. The later is used by pro bodybuilders to increase muscle mass.

Antidepressants

Chronic pain is always accompanied by depression and melancholy. Pain management in arthralgia is always primary. But, you also need to address the sadness arising due to continuous ache.

After a consultation with a doctor, you can take any antidepressant medication. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Citalopram (Celexa), Escitalopram (Lexapro), Fluoxetine (Prozac) are the most common antidepressant medications.

SSRIs act by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, a neurotransmitter found in the central nervous system (CNS).

Anticonvulsants

People have been using anticonvulsant or anti-seizure drugs for long to manage severe pain. When pain in the joint gets worse, the doctor may prescribe you this kind of medication.

antiseizure medications such as Gabapentine, carbamazepine, etc work best in nerve pain. When your arthralgia gets worse and arising due to nerve issues, the doctor may recommend you anticonvulsant medication.

Venlafaxine

Venlafaxine is a bicyclic antidepressant drug but the way it acts resembles tricyclic antidepressants. This potential medication inhibits the reuptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine.

Studies on animal and human volunteers have shown that venlafaxine can ease pain syndrome including severe arthralgia. However, no antidepressant drug is yet approved to treat pain.

Treatment without medication

Besides taking medication treatment of arthralgia involves several other approaches. They come with lesser side effects and provide long term results in easing joint pain.

The most common approaches to ease arthralgia are:

  • Exercise
  • Proper rest
  • Dietary changes
  • Acupuncture
  • 3D Biomag pulsed therapy

Exercise

Exercise has the potential to heal any lifestyle disease to a greater extent. According to a 2013 study, exercise reduced severe artharlgia by 20 percent.

However, choose the right exercise that you can do. Some exercise may put more strain on your joint and can aggravate joint ache. Therefore, be selective in choosing a workout plan.

Proper rest

If you are suffering from severe arthralgia due to any underlying condition, aggressive physical work can worsen the pain. Therefore, proper rest is quite necessary to ease the ache.

Sleeping for 7 to 8 hours a day can help you recover from joint ache soon. It is because the body needs proper sleep to recover from injury.

Dietary changes

A healthy diet is always recommended to recover for injury-related arthralgia. A balanced diet is a good option to recover faster.

Sometime, the doctor may recommend a Glucosamine, a dietary supplement. This supplement is used to manage arthritis and can show promising results in managing joint aches.

Acupuncture

According to some reliable research, acupuncture can ease arthralgia. The study decreased the Aromatase inhibitor-induced pain in postmenopausal breast cancer patients.

Some study has shown that the pain-relieving effects of acupuncture are long-lasting as long as 12 months.

2000 or more acupuncture points are linked to the meridians. Activating those points with any sharp object like a needle will make the qi right. This will result in pain relief.

3-d Biomag Pulsed Magnetic Therapy

Biomag pulsed therapy is a novel system for pain management.  It generates an electromagnetic pulse to fasten the healing process. Moreover, the regeneration of new cells is also promoted.

Many studies support that Polarised light phototherapy combined with Biomag therapy can have an analgesic effect on joint pain.

The Takeaway

Arthralgia is a symptom of a disease side effect of medication or consequence of an injury. Treatment of severe arthralgia should be based on addressing the underlying cause.

Medication is an option but it comes with other potential side effects. It is better to consult a physician before taking any over the counter medication. Analgesic drugs can provide you instant relief. However, follow the proper instruction on how to take it. Before relying on any medication, it is always a better option to relieve severe arthralgia with exercise, therapy, and diet changes.
